Travel Baseball Spring 2024 Tryouts

Travel Baseball

In this section...

Each spring, summer, and fall, Pelham Little League sends travel baseball teams to play competitive baseball against other nearby teams and clubs in Westchester Baseball Association, which includes teams from Westchester County and the Bronx. Weeknight games start anytime from 5:45 p.m. up to 8:00 p.m. and weekend games are from 8:30 a.m. up to 8:00 p.m.

Please know that Travel Baseball is a competitive program, and unlike regular Little League, not every player will get equal playing time. In addition, travel baseball requires players and parents to make a commitment to the program forgoing other travel sports programs. Pelham Little League Travel players generally cannot play in other travel programs without permission from the league and coaches.

Spring Travel Baseball          Top ↑

PLL Spring Travel is a relatively new addition to the league. Spring travel takes place during the regular Little League season with games being played only on Sundays as double-headers. Spring travel does not interfere with regular Little League so kids who make it onto the spring travel teams will not have to miss any Little League games. All kids who play Spring Travel, except for U13 and above, MUST also play Little League.

Protecting Pitchers' Arms

One issue the comes up with spring travel is pitcher availability. In order to protect players’ arms, PLL limits the number of pitches a player can throw in a week. This sometimes causes conflicts between Little League and Travel teams. In general, since teams are smaller and the games are competitive, we give Travel teams priority for pitching during the regular season. This turns out to be a good thing for Little League teams as it gives more kids a chance to pitch in an organized recreational setting.

By the time the Little League Playoffs begin, however, Spring travel usually ends so travel pitchers become available for their respective Little League teams. Please see our section on pitching limits for players.

Summer Travel Baseball          Top ↑

Summer baseball takes place from late-June through to approximately the second weekend of August. Typically, there are anywhere from two to four games per week, with occasional games on Saturdays and/or Sundays. There may be as many as 20 games played over this 6-week period. There is also a possibility of scheduled doubleheaders.

The Williamsport Tournament          Top ↑

The Williamsport Tournament is an international baseball tournament, which finishes with the Little League U12/U11/U10 World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Pelham Williamsport teams are different from regular travel teams in that the Williamsport teams only compete in the Williamsport tournament. This tournament is highly regulated and the competition level is high. Pelham plays in District 21, which includes teams from Mt. Vernon, New Rochelle, and Yonkers. These are the teams that we meet in the first round of the tournament.

Players on our PLL Williamsport Tournament teams represent the best in their age groups from their respective Little Leagues, and function more as league all-star teams. PLL Williamsport teams are chosen by PLL based on a combination of their tryout performance, little league season, and spring travel performances. There are strict rules about playtime and pitch counts, along with limits the number of players teams can carry. Because of tournament regulations, we require parents to provide us with proof of their child's birthdate and residence.

Players who are selected for the Williamsport Team cannot miss ANY games during the tournament except for illness, injury, or special circumstance.

Fall Travel Baseball          Top ↑

The Fall Travel season generally begins the weekend after Labor Day and ends in early November. Fall games are played on Friday evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays – never on weekdays. The exception to this is for tournaments that take place on Columbus/Indigenous Peoples Day where some games may be played on Monday.

Your commitment is critical to the coaches, the other players and for the coach’s ability to effectively organize and manage the team.

Boys U12 Fall          Top ↑

The U12 Boys who have finished with little league after the summer season (aged out of the program) are transitioned into a fall league on 90 foot bases to prepare them for the school modified season and their future baseball leagues.

Coaches          Top ↑

Coaches are selected from our pool of Little League Recreational coaches. It is a Little League rule that in order to coach a summer team, you must have coached a rec team during the spring season. Anyone who is interested in coaching should fill out an application at the try out and hand it in.

Uniforms          Top ↑

Pelham has a standard travel uniform that players will re-use each year that they play travel ball. The shirt, hat, pants, and socks must be purchased through the team store. Once purchased, these uniforms will be used every year and in all travel seasons.

Fees          Top ↑

Fees will be collected after tryouts once players have been selected for a team. Parents of selected players will be asked to register for the appropriate travel program through the regular registry process.
